Pottsville Man Held on $100,000 Bail for Child Sexual Assault Charges

A Pottsville man is behind bars for the alleged sexual assault of a minor.
On Thursday, July 25, 2024, at approximately 11 PM, members of the Pottsville Bureau of Police arrested 44-year-old John Tomas Riley of Pottsville.

The arrest followed an investigation stemming from allegations made in April 2024 by a now 15-year-old female who previously lived in the city. She disclosed that she may have been the victim of a crime.

The investigation included multiple interviews with the victim, as well as a forensic interview and examination at the Child's Resource Center in Harrisburg. The Schuylkill County District Attorney's Office was consulted throughout the process.

On Thursday, July 25, 2024, a criminal complaint was approved and filed before Magisterial District Judge James Reiley by Captain Joseph Welsh. The complaint alleges that Riley had inappropriate sexual contact with the victim at his residence in Pottsville on various dates and times dating back to 2019.

Riley has been charged with multiple serious offenses, including Rape, Rape of a Child, Involuntary Deviate Sexual Intercourse, IDSI with a Child, Aggravated Indecent Assault of a victim under 16, Indecent Assault, Statutory Sexual Assault, and Corruption of Minors.

Riley was arraigned before on-call Magisterial District Judge Rossi and committed to Schuylkill County Prison, unable to post $100,000 straight cash bail.
