Pottsville Pizzeria Celebrates 75 Years of Tradition This Saturday

This Saturday, Pottsville Pizzeria will celebrate its 75th anniversary.

The pizzeria has been serving the community with its classic pizzas and subs since the summer of 1949.

The story of Pottsville Pizzeria began when Mrs. Paparazo and her three sons opened the first pizzeria in the area in the basement of their home at 441 Prospect St. The business quickly grew, leading to a move in September 1953 to a more convenient location at 530 N. Centre St. This relocation allowined for the development and expansion of their product offerings. It was here that the concept of unbaked pizzas for home baking was born, eventually evolving into the famous Packaged and Frozen Pizzas.

The 1950s saw another significant innovation with the creation of the iconic pizza box, initially handmade. From 1995 to 2022, the boxes were produced by Sam and Kathy Breininger of Sam’s Machine Shop. Although the machine and the box were retired in 2022, Bruce Becker commemorated this tradition with a special painting, now available as prints.

In July 1962, Pottsville Pizzeria expanded again with a grand opening at 800 S. Centre St., the former location of The Mansion House, a summer hotel with nearly a century of history. The pizzeria operated both locations until 2002 when the 530 N. Centre St. location was sold to a former employee.

The legacy of the pizzeria has been carried forward by Todd Paparazo and longtime employee Scott Kline, who has been with the pizzeria for 38 years. The business mourned the loss of Lou Paparazo in March 2012, but his memory and dedication live on through the pizzeria’s continued success.

To celebrate 75 years of tradition, Pottsville Pizzeria is hosting a special anniversary party on July 27th, 2024, from 10 AM to 4 PM.
