Route 209 Closed in Schuylkill County for 3-Week Period for Bridge Replacement

Drivers who use Route 209 in Reilly Township should be prepared for a new detour.

According to PennDOT, Route 209 closed Friday to allow for the replacement of an existing single span bridge over Swatara Creek with a pre-cast reinforced concrete box culvert.

The road will remain closed for a 3-week detour period with a detour that spans approximately 15 miles. The detour follows Route 25 near Newtown, Interstate 81, and Route 901 from Interstate 81 to Minersville and Norwegian Township.

In addition to the bridge replacement, the project includes roadway approach work, shoulder widening, and other miscellaneous construction on US 209, stretching from approximately 220 feet south of Swatara Creek to about 233 feet north of Swatara Creek.

JVI, Inc. of York Springs, PA is the general contractor for the $883,436.50 project. The contract was executed on August 10, 2023, and all work is expected to be completed by August 29, 2024.

An average daily traffic volume of 2,084 vehicles travels this roadway.
