The Schuylkill County Historical Society has announced a lineup of events for the next month.
Civil War Battle of the Crater Presentation
On Tuesday, July 30, at 5:30 p.m., the Society will present a program on the Civil War Battle of the Crater at the Charles Baber Cemetery, located at 14th and Market St., Pottsville.
Civil War historian Tom Shay, along with mining engineer Dave Williams, will delve into the story of Pennsylvania’s 48th regiment of local anthracite miners who dug a tunnel to blow up a Confederate fort.

Roaring ‘20s Night
Step back in time to the glamorous era of the Roaring ‘20s on Saturday, Aug. 17, beginning at 4:30 p.m. at Main Street Moonshine, 101 W. Main St., Schuylkill Haven. The evening will feature Charleston dance lessons, a 1920s costume contest, a photo opportunity with a 1925 Model T Ford, a basket raffle, and a trivia contest starting at 6:30 p.m. ?For more details, call the Society at 570-622-7540.
Local Reads Book Club Meeting
The Local Reads Book Club will convene on Wednesday, Aug. 28, at 6:30 p.m. at the Schuylkill County Historical Society, 305 N. Centre St., Pottsville, to discuss “Growin’ up Skook,” a humorous memoir about life in 1960s Ashland. Author Thomas H.
