North Schuylkill Band Recreates 1975 Photo at Ashland's Mother Memorial

On Wednesday morning, the North Schuylkill Band recreated a little bit of history at Ashland's Mother's Memorial.

In 1975, the year North Schuylkill High School opened, its marching band posed in front of Ashland's Mother Memorial for a photo that was published in the school's Odyssey Yearbook.

The Mother's Memorial is a one-of-a-kind historic place and the only statue in the world that honors all mothers. This landmark was recognized in 2013 by the Pennsylvania State Historical Marker Dedication and added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The idea to recreate this historic photo came to fruition when Adam Bernodin III, of Ashland, was talking to Band Director Jacob Shoener. There was talk of doing the photo last year, and now, that vision has become a reality.

On Wednesday, picture day for the band, Professional School Photography was on hand to help recreate the photo.   The band was also wearing their new uniforms that will debut for the 2024 season.

Bernodin said he is proud the school district is recognizing local history. It helps students develop a sense of identity and pride in their community, fosters an appreciation for those who came before them, and teaches valuable lessons about the past that can inform and inspire the future.

Bernodin expressed his gratitude, thanking Superintendent Dr. Robert Ackell and Band Director Jacob Shoener for making this happen to preserve the history of the North Schuylkill School District and Ashland.
