Schuylkill County and Pennsylvania Law Enforcement are warning residents of a phone scam where the caller impersonates a police officer.
According to Schuylkill County Sheriff Joseph Groody, his office has been contacted by at least 30 people in the last few days after they have been contacted by phone by someone impersonating the Schuylkill County Sheriff's office.
Sheriff Groody says the caller tells the victim that they have an active warrant, or they missed jury duty and they must pay a fine over the phone or they will be arrested.
Groody said the number on the Caller ID also appears as if it comes from his office.
On Friday morning, the Pennsylvania State Police at Schuylkill Haven also issued an alert after receiving numerous reports from people that received the calls. Per the alert from State Police, the callers attempt to have the victim pay through bitcoin machines.
Both Sheriff Groody and State Police say they will never call anyone if they have a warrant or miss jury duty.
Should you have any questions on a phone scam, Schuylkill County law enforcement says to hang up and call their offices directly.
