Inmate Serving Life Sentence Found Dead at SCI Mahanoy; Investigation Underway


An inmate serving a life sentence at a State Prison in Schuylkill County was found dead this week.
Bernadette Mason, superintendent of the State Correctional Institution at Mahanoy reported that inmate Jason Roe, 44, was found unresponsive in his cell on September 3, 2024. 

Prison staff and medical personnel immediately responded and attempted life-saving measures. Roe was pronounced deceased at 9:28 p.m.

Roe was serving a Life sentence for first degree Murder from Greene County. He has been at SCI Mahanoy since October 7, 2021.

In accordance with policy, the Pennsylvania State Police were notified and will conduct an investigation. The official cause of death will be determined by the Schuylkill County Coroner’s Office.
