Rock Removal Project on Route 61 to Continue through Tuesday

Drivers should continue to expect delays on Route 61/The Grade through Tuesday for a rock removal job that is part of the Route 61 Reconstruction Project.

As of Saturday morning, construction crews were continuing to remove a large amount of rock on the "S" curve just north of the Darkwater Road intersection.

The work began Friday morning, September 20, 2024, and will continue through Tuesday, September 24, 2024, while construction crews work around the clock to clear a significant portion of the roadway. This continuous day-and-night effort is expected to cause intermittent traffic stoppages, with delays lasting up to 15 minutes at a time.

Motorists traveling on Route 61 are advised to plan ahead, allowing extra travel time or considering alternate routes to bypass the construction zone. Patience and caution are urged for those passing through the area as the work progresses.

Early plans that were shown for the Route 61 Reconstruction Project showed that the rock being removed will also remove the "S" turn and allow for a straighter highway.
