Mae E. Loftus, 84, former Ashland resident, passed away Saturday, September 28, 2024, at the Mt. Carmel Assisted Living Center, Mt. Carmel.

The Richard W. Fritz Funeral Home, Ashland, is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Chester C. Powers
, 91, of Pine Grove, passed away on Friday, September 27, 2024 in Providence Place, Pine Grove.

Born on July 18, 1933 in Philadelphia, he was a son of the late Chester A. and Anna Petersen Powers.

Chester was a graduate of Frankford High School in Philadelphia and received an Associates Degree from Temple University.

He was an Army veteran with Co K 155th Inf. 31st Div. at Camp Atterbury, IN from June 16, 1953 to Dec. 31, 1953. On January 1, 1954, Camp Atterbury was closed and Chester and many others traveled to Fort Carson, CO in truck convoys where he served with the Co. E 61st Inf Reg 8th Div at Fort Carson, CO until May 1955. He was drafted near the end of the Korean War but was never sent overseas because the hostilities ended while he was in basic training.

Chester was an accountant and worked for Philadelphia Gas Works.

He was a member of the Suedberg Church of God, Pine Grove, Tremont Senior Citizens, Pine Grove VFW, and had been the secretary on the board at Swatara Village. He enjoyed playing bingo when he lived at Swatara Village, fishing, stamp collecting, coin collecting, bike riding and trains. He loved the outdoors and working in his yard.

Preceding him in death was his wife of 52 years, Virginia Myers Powers and a brother Charles Powers.

Surviving are two sons, David and wife Pamela Powers of Quakertown, Kenneth and wife Carolann Powers of Philadelphia; a granddaughter, Ashley Guarino; three Grandsons, Bryan and wife Sinead Powers, Thomas and wife Caroline Powers, Jake Powers and fiancé Emily Mosenson; three great grandsons, Chase, Bryce, and Mason Guarino.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. at the H. L. Snyder Funeral Home, Inc., Pine Grove with Pastor Terry Jansma officiating. There will be a viewing on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. at the Funeral Home. Interment with military honors will follow in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.

In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer contributions be made to the Suedberg Church of God, P. O. Box 106, Pine Grove, PA 17963 in his memory.

Elva G. Slotterback
, 88, formerly of Lavelle and Jacksonville, FL, passed away peacefully on September 12th at Rosewood Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, where she was temporarily admitted for treatment. Until her recent illness, she had been residing at Pine Brook Senior Assisted Living Facility in Orwigsburg, since September of 2019.

Born in Lavelle, she was a daughter of the late Guy and Helen (Overcott) Slotterback.

Elva graduated with 2 master degrees from Temple University. She taught history for the former Frackville High School before moving to Florida where she taught Business at Fletcher High School until her retirement.

Elva was very close with her nieces and nephews and enjoyed her trips back to Pennsylvania for holidays and special occasions. She enjoyed the scenic mountains that surround our area. She enjoyed traveling especially back to her grandparents’ homeland of Germany.

She was a member of several bridge clubs and enjoyed playing with her friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings: Guy Slotterback Jr., Ann Cowart, Richard Slotterback, Grace Slotterback and Marian Slotterback; her nephew, Richard Slotterback.

Elva is survived by her nieces and nephew: Jan, Barbara, Helen, Jane, John and Sally; also by several great nieces and nephews.

Services will be announced.

Dorothy M. (Taylor) Langon
, 93, of Orwigsburg formerly of Girardville passed away early Friday morning at Orwigsburg Center surrounded by her family.

Born September 8, 1931 in Mount Carmel she was the daughter of the late Dorothy (Augustine) and William Taylor.

She was the wife of the late James P. Langon Sr. who passed in 2012.

Dorothy was of the Catholic faith and was a member of the former St. Joseph’s Church in Girardville. She was a member of Saint Ambrose Church in Schuylkill Haven.

Dorothy graduated from Mount Carmel Township High School in 1949 and from the Ashland School of Nursing in 1952. She worked as a Registered Nurse for most of her career at the Hamburg Center. Prior to that she did private duty and worked at the Ashland State Hospital. She retired in 1993 as law librarian for the Department of Labor & Industry in Harrisburg.

She was a member of Cardinal Brennan Mothers Guild and Jack Kehoe Division I AOH Auxiliary. Dorothy enjoyed reading, poetry, nature, music and playing cards.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son in law Lawrence Ryan.

Dorothy is survived by; son Dr. James Langon (Carolyn) of Orwigsburg; daughter Judith “Judy” Ryan of Orwigsburg; brother Warren Taylor of Westminster MD; 4 grandchildren Jason Ryan of Orwigsburg, Alyson Langon (Jordan Melcon) of VT, Mallory Consonery (Nick) of CT, Austin Langon (Danielle) of Linglestown; 7 great grandchildren; Violet, Evelyn, Daniel, Matteo, Luke, June & Arlo; 2 nephews Jeff and Gregory Taylor.

A viewing for family and friends will be held on Tuesday morning October 1st from 9:30-10:30 AM at St. Ambrose Church, 201 Randel St, Schuylkill Haven PA 17972. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 AM with Rev. Msgr. Edward S. Zemanik officiating. Burial will follow mass at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Fountain Springs.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your local library in Dorothy’s memory or to Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, 1700 Hawk Mountain Rd, Kempton PA 19529.
