DISTRICT XI GIRLS SOCCER: Williams Valley Advances to Semifinals After Shootout Win Over Minersville

In a District XI Class 1A quarterfinal match, the Williams Valley Vikings and Minersville Battlin' Miners fought through 80 minutes of regulation, two overtimes, and a penalty shootout to determine who would move on in the postseason.

After a grueling scoreless battle, it was Williams Valley who emerged victorious in a 2-1 shootout.

Both teams showed incredible defensive throughout the match, with neither side allowing a single goal through regulation and the subsequent overtimes. Despite numerous chances on both ends, neither could break the deadlock, and the game proceeded to penalty kicks.

In the shootout, Williams Valley's Kayla Hand and Quin Smeltz kept their cool under pressure, each netting goals for the Vikings. Minersville's Grace Sterner managed to score one for the Miners, but it wasn’t enough to match Williams Valley’s two successful strikes. With a 2-1 advantage in the shootout, Williams Valley secured their place in the semifinals.

The Vikings will now face Moravian Academy in the Class 1A semifinals on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at Northwestern Lehigh.
