Mahanoy City Man Arrested After Attempting to Break Into Home, Despite Previous Warnings

A Mahanoy City man is locked up in Schuylkill County Prison after attempted to break into a home.

According to court papers filed by Mahanoy City Police Chief Thomas Rentschler, on Saturday, October 5th, 2024, around 8:00am, he received a dispatch for a report of a disturbance in the 1200 Block of East Centre Street involving a male trying to gain entry into a residence.

The caller told Schuylkill 911 that the male involved was Neil Kershetsky, 42, of Mahanoy City.  Chief Rentschler was familiar with Kershetsky as he dealt with him 3 times in the previous 24 hours.

Chief Rentschler found Kershetsky on the back porch of a home trying to kick in a back door.  During an incident the previous day, Kershetsky was warned not to return to this residence.

The homeowners had obtained a protect from abuse order due to the previous incidents.

Chief Rentschler took Kershetsky into custody on charges of criminal attempt to commit burglary, criminal attempt to commit trespassing involving breaking into a structure, disorderly conduct, and criminal mischief.

He was arraigned by on-call Magisterial District Judge Stephen Bayer and locked up in Schuylkill County Prison on $25,000 straight cash bail.

Kershetsky remains locked up awaited a preliminary hearing which is scheduled for October 10th, 2024 before Magisterial District Judge Anthony Kilker.
