On Wednesday, November 20, 2024, DaVita Frackville Dialysis Center welcomed back a familiar face—James Blackwell, a former patient who recently received a life-saving kidney transplant.
The reunion celebrated Blackwell's journey and his deep connection with the care team that supported him through months of dialysis treatment.
Blackwell began dialysis at DaVita Frackville in October 2023 after being diagnosed with kidney failure. For nine months, he underwent intensive treatments three times a week, each lasting up to four hours. During that time, he formed close bonds with the dedicated team who provided his care.
On July 3, 2024, Blackwell’s life changed when he received a living kidney donation from his sister. The successful transplant eliminated his need for dialysis, offering him a new lease on life. Last week, Blackwell and his wife returned to the center, reuniting with the staff who played a role in his journey to recovery.
The Growing Need for Kidney Transplants in Pennsylvania
Blackwell's story emphasizes need for organ donations. In Pennsylvania, approximately 30,000 individuals with kidney failure currently rely on dialysis to survive. As of July 31, 2024, more than 5,800 Pennsylvanians remain on the waiting list for a kidney transplant.
Kidney transplantation is widely regarded as the best treatment option for kidney failure, as it offers a better quality of life and eliminates the need for dialysis. Living kidney donation, where a healthy person donates one of their kidneys, is one way to address long transplant wait times. Because individuals can live healthy lives with just one kidney, this option provides hope for many patients still waiting for a match.
