Pottsville CollegeTowne Secures $3 Million Grant for Renovation Project

Alvernia University has received a $3 million grant from Pennsylvania’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) to support the next phase of renovations at its Pottsville CollegeTowne location.

The state funding aides Alvernia’s ongoing CollegeTowne initiative, which aims to revitalize the downtown areas of both Pottsville and Reading.

The latest grant will facilitate the transformation of the former Giant grocery store on Progress Avenue in Pottsville, a location that opened as Pottsville CollegeTowne in January 2023. This phase will include the creation of new retail spaces and foster partnerships with local entities like the Schuylkill YMCA. In total, Alvernia has garnered $18.5 million in redevelopment grants for its CollegeTowne projects in both cities, underscoring the university’s commitment to regional economic development and community revitalization.

Alvernia University President Dr. Glynis A. Fitzgerald expressed appreciation for the support. “The CollegeTowne initiatives continue to bring our communities together and inspire belief in the redevelopment of Reading and Pottsville,” she said. “This funding will continue to reshape the future of both cities, and we are grateful to Governor Shapiro, Senators Schwank, Argall, and Martin, Representatives Guzman and Twardzik, and countless others for their continued belief and support."

Launched in 2019, Alvernia’s CollegeTowne project in Reading has already seen two successful phases, with the university investing $43 million in the transformation of the John R. Post Center on Penn Street. Plans for Phase III in Reading will focus on the renovation of the historic American House, adding a community-based health center in partnership with Berks Community Health Center, alongside expanded business incubator and retail spaces.

The RACP grant program, overseen by Pennsylvania’s Office of the Budget, is dedicated to supporting regional projects that drive economic, civic, and cultural growth. These projects are selected for their potential to significantly enhance employment opportunities, generate tax revenue, and improve quality of life for local communities.
