Victim Identified in Fatal Crash near Mahanoy City

MAHANOY TOWNSHIP - The Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville have released details and identified the victim of a fatal crash near Mahanoy City on Thursday.

Troopers say the crash occurred around 3:00pm, as Thomas Flaherty, 65, of Delano was traveling east in a Dodge Caravan in the area of 1200 Morea Road and Michael Perchak, 70, of Hazle Township was traveling west in a Peterbilt Tractor Trailer.

Police say Flaherty's vehicle left the southside of the eastbound lane and struck a traffic sign, then crossed into the westbound lane and struck Perchak's truck.  The tractor trailer then struck a guardrail and went down and embankment.

Flaherty was pronounced deceased at the scene by Schuylkill County Deputy Al Barnes.

Perchak sustained a head inury and was transported to Lehigh Valley Cedar Crest by Mahanoy City Ambulance.

Morea Road was closed for several hours while State Police investigated the scene.  It has since reopened.
