UPDATE: Cause of Tremont Blaze Ruled as Accidental Kitchen Fire

Tremont Fire has provided an update on a blaze that destroyed two homes Wednesday evening.

Just after 5:30pm, firefighters were dispatched to a working house fire at 314 East Main Street in Tremont.  Within minutes, a fire chief was on scene and confirmed a working fire showing from the rear of the home.

Firefighters from surrounding communities responded and battled the flames as well as winds and cold temperatures.

The quickly spreading fire forced firefighters to evacuate the structure as it engulfed the home and forced them to fight the fire defensively.

The fire was brought under control but not before destroying the connected homes at 314 and 312.

Two families totaling 5 people would be displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

According to Tremont's 1st Assistant Chief Justin Moeller, a State Police Fire Marshal was called in to investigate.  The investigation took place Thursday morning and it was determined that the fire was started by a culinary incident in 314 East Main Street and was ruled accidental.
