Ashland Borough Welcomes New Fire Department Leadership in Special Ceremony

A special presentation marked the beginning of Ashland’s Borough Council meeting on Wednesday evening as the community recognized the new leadership team of the borough’s Fire Department.

Members from both the Washington Fire Company and the American Hose Company were present to show their support for the department’s new officers.

The short ceremony was led by former Ashland Fire Chief Phil Groody Sr., who recently stepped down from his position at the end of 2024 after 25 years of dedicated service as Chief. In his final act as chief, Groody presented badges to the borough’s new fire leadership, marking a new Chapter in the department.

The first badge presentation was to Charles Orth, the newly appointed Fire Chief. Chief Orth, a longtime member of the Washington Fire Company, assumes the top leadership role in the borough’s fire services.

Groody continued the ceremony by presenting the First Assistant Chief badge to Chris Groody, representing the American Hose Company. Chris Groody had previously served as the Second Assistant Chief.

Next, the Second Assistant Chief badge was awarded to Charles Steinhilber of the Washington Fire Company. Steinhilber, who moves up from his prior position as Third Assistant Chief.

Finally, the Third Assistant Chief badge was presented to Phil Groody Jr., a member of the American Hose Company. This appointment represents a new chapter for the younger Groody as he steps into a leadership position within the department.

Concluding the ceremony, Phil Groody Sr. noted that while he is stepping down from the role of Fire Chief, he is not retiring from service altogether. He will continue to contribute to the department in the newly created role of Safety Officer, focusing on enhancing safety protocols and procedures for the borough’s fire operations.
