The Frackville Police Department is urging residents to stay vigilant after investigating a suspicious incident involving a common phone scam targeting older adults.
According to Frackville Police Chief Paul Olson, officers were dispatched on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at approximately 12:18 p.m. after a local resident reported receiving a fraudulent phone call.
The caller, a male, claimed to be her grandson and stated that he needed $7,500 in cash for bail following a car accident. He further claimed to be in Allegheny County Prison and instructed the resident to contact an attorney to arrange payment.
The resident, however, quickly recognized the scam and did not provide any money or personal information. Authorities confirmed that the entire scenario was fabricated and identified it as part of the “Grandparents Scam,” a deceptive scheme that preys on seniors by impersonating family members in distress.
Police are reminding the public to be cautious when answering unfamiliar or unidentified phone calls. They strongly advise against sharing any financial or personal information over the phone, via text, or through email without verifying the legitimacy of the request.
Anyone with questions, concerns, or who may have experienced a similar scam is encouraged to contact the Frackville Police Department at 570-628-3792.
