Minersville Police Charge Driver in Crosswalk Accident Involving Mother and Child

Minersville Police have filed charges against a woman for a serious pedestrian accident that left a mother and her son injured at an intersection last week.

The incident occurred on the morning of Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at approximately 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of North Street and North Fifth Street.

According to a report from the Minersville Police Department, a 37-year-old woman and her 8-year-old son were crossing North Street from North Fifth Street within a clearly marked crosswalk when they were struck by a vehicle.

The vehicle involved, a white Toyota RAV4, was driven by Carol Shimsky, 62, of Minersville. Authorities stated that Shimsky had been traveling south on North Fifth Street and came to a complete stop at the stop sign before making a left turn onto the 400 block of North Street. During the turn, her vehicle struck both pedestrians, knocking them to the ground and causing significant injuries.

Emergency responders transported the 8-year-old boy to Lehigh Valley Hospital–Cedar Crest, where he is being treated for a fractured pelvis. His mother sustained a hand injury when one of the vehicle’s tires rolled over her hand as she lay on the ground.

Investigators emphasized that both pedestrians were walking within a clearly marked crosswalk at the time of the collision.

Following the investigation, police filed summary charges against Shimsky on Wednesday, including Right of Way to Pedestrians Crossing the Roadway. The charges were filed through Magisterial District Judge Dave Plachko’s office in Port Carbon.
