Minersville Police Investigating Pedestrian Accident Involving Mother and Son

Minersville Police are conducting an investigation following a serious accident involving two pedestrians being struck.

The incident occurred on the morning of Tuesday, January 7, 2025.  around 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of North Street and North Fifth Street.

According to a report from police, a 37-year-old woman and her 8-year-old son were crossing North Street from North Fifth Street. The pair were walking within a clearly marked crosswalk when they were struck by a vehicle.

The vehicle, a white Toyota RAV4, was driven by Carol Shimsky, 62, of Minersville. Authorities stated that Shimsky had been traveling south on North Fifth Street. Upon reaching the intersection, she stopped at the stop sign before making a left turn onto the 400 block of North Street. During the turn, Shimsky’s vehicle struck both pedestrians, knocking them to the ground and causing serious injuries.

Emergency responders transported the 8-year-old boy to Lehigh Valley Hospital–Cedar Crest, where he is being treated for a fractured pelvis. The 37-year-old woman suffered a hand injury when one of the vehicle’s tires ran over her hand while she was on the ground.

Authorities emphasized that both pedestrians were in a clearly marked crosswalk at the time of the accident. The investigation is ongoing, and charges against Shimsky are pending its completion.
