Winterfest is heating up this January with a unique and spirited competition that celebrates a beloved coal region tradition.
The Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Pioneer Pole Buildings, invites residents to test their brews at the Schuylkill Winterfest Boilo Contest on Saturday, January 18th, 2025.
The contest will run from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM, offering a showdown between the region’s finest boilo-makers.
Contestants will bring 1.5 quarts of their best boilo, approximately the same amount as a standard Four Queens fifth, to be judged by a panel of local experts. The identities of the participants will remain hidden to ensure impartial scoring.
Two Categories for Competition
Boilo enthusiasts can enter in one of two categories:
Traditional Boilo: Staying true to classic recipes rooted in the coal region’s heritage.
Non-Traditional Boilo: Innovative and creative takes on the cherished drink.
Boilo, often dubbed the “Champagne of the Coal Region,” is a hot whiskey-based beverage commonly flavored with citrus, honey, and spices. Its popularity stems from its warming qualities during Pennsylvania’s cold winter months.
