The Ruth Steinert Memorial Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), in Pine Grove, is facing an urgent financial crisis that threatens its ability to continue providing critical services.
After more than two decades of lifesaving work as a no-kill shelter, the organization has reached out to the community with a plea for help.
In a letter addressed to supporters, the shelter detailed the challenges it faces due to rising costs and a significant drop in donations. Essential supplies, medical treatments, and maintenance expenses have surged, while broader economic difficulties have limited many supporters’ ability to give. Unlike many other shelters, the Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA receives no government funding and depends entirely on donations and the dedication of volunteers.
“We are now in danger of closing our doors for good,” the letter states. “Without immediate financial support, we will no longer be able to provide the essential care and services that our animals depend on.”
The shelter has been a beacon of compassion, offering rescue and rehabilitation for animals in dire situations and finding them loving forever homes. Each rescued animal represents a story of transformation, from suffering to safety, and shelter staff are determined to continue this mission despite the hardships.
To illustrate how donations directly impact operations, the SPCA outlined the following funding needs:
- $50 provides food and basic care for one animal for a week.
- $100 covers the cost of vaccinations and medical check-ups.
- $250 supports emergency medical treatments and surgeries for injured animals.
- $500 helps maintain the shelter facilities to ensure a safe environment.
- $1,000 contributes to adoption programs and outreach efforts to place animals in loving homes.
Every contribution, no matter the size, can make a difference in the lives of vulnerable animals. The organization is also encouraging supporters to consider becoming monthly donors to provide a more stable and reliable source of funding.
“We understand these are challenging times for everyone, and we are deeply grateful for any support,” the letter continues. “Your kindness and generosity have always been the backbone of our shelter.”
