In a major political shift, Schuylkill County District Attorney Michael A. O’Pake announced his decision to switch his party affiliation from Democrat to Republican, citing deepening ideological differences with the national Democratic Party.
O’Pake, who has served Schuylkill County for more than three decades, released a public statement explaining his reasons for the change. He emphasized his longstanding commitment to law and order, public safety, and supporting law enforcement, principles he believes are no longer adequately represented by the Democratic Party.
“I have prided myself on being fair, consistent, and impartial in recommending sentences for individuals convicted of violating the law,” O’Pake said. “I have always had the support of Law Enforcement during my time as District Attorney because I have been tough on crime and vigorously prosecuted those individuals that violate the law.”
In his statement, O’Pake expressed concerns about national Democratic policies that he argues undermine public safety and community well-being. He pointed to initiatives advocating for police defunding, decriminalization of drug-related offenses, and policies focused on gun control and increased taxation.
“Instead of focusing on working people, law and order, child safety, drug-free schools, and safe neighborhoods, the new version of the Democratic Party has embraced issues that do not impact most Schuylkill County residents, such as open borders, sweeping gun control, and increased taxes,” he stated.
O’Pake also highlighted his stance on key issues that align more closely with Republican values, including:
- Support for Law Enforcement: He firmly opposes efforts to defund the police.
- Second Amendment Rights: He is committed to protecting Americans’ right to bear arms.
- Vaccine Freedom: He favors personal choice over government-mandated vaccinations.
- Economic Development: He prioritizes infrastructure improvement and job creation over expansive public welfare programs for non-citizens.
O’Pake described his decision as the result of over a year of reflection and conversations with family and trusted advisors. He reaffirmed his dedication to nonpartisan governance within the District Attorney’s office.
“My decisions on which cases to prosecute have never been based on politics,” he said. “My decisions on case resolutions have likewise never been influenced by political considerations. I stand firm behind my record of serving the people, not politics.”
O’Pake assured the public that his leadership approach and prosecutorial decisions will remain unchanged. He pledged to continue focusing on drug-free schools, safe neighborhoods, and combating violent crime.
The announcement marks a significant shift in local politics, given O’Pake’s long tenure as a Democratic official. However, he expressed optimism about his future as a Republican and reiterated his commitment to public service.
“I look forward to many more years of public service beyond my over thirty years to date,” O’Pake concluded.
