Margaret Unitis, 84, of Weatherly, died on Thursday, October 31, 2024, in Weatherly. She was the wife John Unitis, Jr. with whom she celebrated sixty-one years of marriage before his death on July 13, 2024. 

Born in Coaldale, Margaret was the daughter of John and Mary (Sirak) Porvaznik. She was a 1957 graduate of Marian High School and completed the nursing program at Sacred Heart Nursing School. Margaret’s career encompassed working as a registered nurse at the Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, at Dr. Farr’s office in Lehighton, and at Coaldale State General Hospital where she worked for fourteen years before retiring in 2001.

John Unitis, Jr., 84, of Weatherly died this past July. Born in Mahanoy City, John was the son of the late John and Margaret (Pervarnick) Unitis. A 1957 graduate of Coaldale High School, he graduated from Stevens Trade School for printing in 1960 before honorably serving in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. John worked as a printer for the Reading Eagle, the Washington Post newspapers and, more recently, was a heavy equipment operator for Bethlehem Mines. He was a member of the Coaldale American Legion, a former member of Coaldale Borough Council, and a former member of the Coaldale Fire Police.

John and Margaret were members of the former St. John Lithuanian Catholic Church of Coaldale where Margaret loved singing in the choir and current members of St. John XXIII Church, Tamaqua. A loving couple, the two could often be found sitting together and shopping on QVC. They loved their grandchildren and supported them in all their activities. John enjoyed hunting and fishing, and Margaret treasured getting together with other retired nurses.

They are survived by two sons, John III and his fiancé Mary Ann Markley of Coaldale, and Robert and his wife Michaele of Atglen, Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Jude Unitis and Hannah Unitis; and niece Vicky Unitis. John is also survived by his brother Ronald and his wife Elaine of Bradenton, Florida. 

Service will be held at 10 AM, Saturday, January 11, 2025, at St. John XXIII Catholic Church, 307 Pine Street, Tamaqua. Interment at Sky View Memorial Park, 108 Lafayette Avenue, Tamaqua, will follow the service. Memorial donations may be made to St. John XXIII Catholic Church. O

Arrangements are being handled by the Zizelmann-Gulla Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Tamaqua.

Sandra M. Kline
, 79, of Shenandoah Heights, passed away on Friday, January 3, 2025, at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.

Born in Shenandoah on May 9, 1945, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Antoinette (Yancufsky) Honufshesky.

Sandra worked in the local garment industry for many years. In her younger years she also studied to be a beautician. She also enjoyed sewing as a hobby, along with doing
crafts, tending to her vegetable garden, and cleaning. She had a love for animals, especially birds and dogs. She enjoyed spending time with her family and visiting friends.

Besides her parents, she was preceded by her sister, Patricia Shearstone in 2018.

Her surviving family includes her 2 nieces- Charlene Kechula Baker (William) who was also her caregiver, and Jessie Balulis (Jim); her nephew- William Shearstone (Alissa); 4 great nieces- Chelsea Balulis (fiancé Collin Klenske), Lindsay Shearstone, Julia Shearstone, and Diamond Taylor; 4 great nephews- Joseph Kechula (fiancé Calia Whitecavage), Haden Kechula, Jacob Baker, and Michael Baker; and 1 great-great niece- Cecelia Kechula.

A visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, January 13th from 8 to 10am at the Oravitz Home for Funerals Inc, 40 N. Jardin St, Shenandoah. Scripture services will be conducted at 10am in the funeral home and will be officiated by Msgr. Ronald Bocian. Burial will immediately follow in St. Casimir’s Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights.
