Travis Smeltz has officially declared his candidacy for Magisterial District Judge in Schuylkill County.
Drawing on decades of experience in federal law enforcement, small business management, and community service, Smeltz aims to bring integrity, fairness, and justice to the role.
Born and raised in Hegins, Smeltz credits his upbringing for instilling values of discipline, perseverance, and self-reliance—qualities he honed through sports like motocross, boxing, wrestling, and mixed martial arts. His early experiences working for his father’s long-standing local business, Dale Smeltz Excavating, provided a foundation in hard work, accountability, and community service.
After earning a degree in Criminal Justice, Smeltz embarked on a career in federal law enforcement. His roles included serving at the U.S. Penitentiary in Lewisburg and the Federal Correctional Institution in Minersville before joining the Federal Air Marshal Service following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Over two decades, he worked as an undercover agent, tasked with detecting and neutralizing foreign and domestic threats, while holding a top-secret security clearance. Smeltz also serves as a Director of the Air Marshal Association, advocating for his colleagues at the national level.
In addition to his federal service, Smeltz returned to Schuylkill County to establish two local businesses: one specializing in security and private investigations and another continuing his father’s excavation and hauling legacy. His contributions to the community extend to roles on the Schuylkill County Zoning and Planning Commission, support for youth sports, charitable initiatives, and disaster relief efforts.
"Schuylkill County has always been my home, and I knew I wanted to raise my family here,” said Smeltz. “With over 5 million miles flown in service to our country, I bring a global perspective rooted in local values. I’m committed to serving our community with integrity and fairness."
Smeltz has completed all necessary coursework and certification to serve as Magisterial District Judge. He believes his extensive background in law enforcement and his dedication to the community uniquely qualify him for the position.
Smeltz resides in Hegins Township with his wife and family. He emphasizes his commitment to building a safer, stronger community for future generations.
