Winter Weather Restrictions in Place for Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County

As a winter storm pushes across east-central Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has implemented temporary travel restrictions on Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County.

The speed limit on Interstate 81 has been reduced to 45 miles per hour. PennDOT is urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel. However, for those who must travel, strict speed regulations will be enforced to mitigate the dangers posed by icy roads and poor visibility.

In addition to the reduced speed limit, Tier 3 vehicle restrictions are now in place for Interstate 81 under the commonwealth’s weather event vehicle restriction plan. The Tier 3 restrictions prohibit most commercial vehicles, school buses, motor coaches, motorcycles, and passenger vehicles towing trailers from using the highway. The only commercial vehicles permitted are loaded single trailers equipped with chains or approved Alternate Traction Devices (ATDs).

Tier 3 Restrictions Summary for Interstate 81:

  • Prohibited Vehicles:

    • All school buses, commercial buses, and motor coaches

    • Motorcycles and RVs/motorhomes

    • Passenger vehicles (cars, SUVs, pickup trucks) towing trailers

  • Commercial Vehicles Permitted:

    • Only loaded single trailers with chains or approved ATDs

PennDOT also reminds commercial drivers and other motorists to remain vigilant even on unrestricted roadways. High winds and snow accumulation can create hazardous conditions. Drivers are advised to:

  • Ensure their loads are secure.

  • Reduce speeds and increase following distances.

  • Use hazard lights when necessary.

PennDOT thanks drivers for their cooperation during this severe weather event and encourages everyone to prioritize safety and heed all travel advisories.
