The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced an investment of approximately $20.4 million in Automated Red-Light Enforcement (ARLE) funding to support 31 safety projects across 25 municipalities statewide.
Since the ARLE program’s inception in 2010, nearly $162 million has been awarded, funding 607 transportation enhancement projects. The program, which uses fines collected from red-light violations at 38 intersections in Philadelphia, is designed to improve safety, enhance mobility, and reduce congestion at signalized intersections.
Municipalities submitted 24 applications, requesting a total of $33.5 million in funding. An eight-member committee evaluated and selected projects based on criteria such as safety benefits, effectiveness, cost, and local and regional impact.
Among the approved projects is an initiative in Schuylkill County’s Butler Township, which has been awarded $20,280 for the purchase of four “Radar Sign Safety in a Box” kits. These kits will be deployed along Fairgrounds Road in Lavelle and Fountain Street in Fountain Springs to reduce excessive speeding and minimize the frequency and severity of motor vehicle accidents.
