A unique and historical tradition will be the focus of a special presentation this evening at the Schuylkill County Historical Society.
Local environmental educator and board member “Porcupine” Pat McKinney will delve into the fascinating history of Pennsylvania Dutch powwowing, a folk healing practice that intertwines religion, belief, and ritual.
The presentation is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 20, at the Historical Society, located at 305 N. Centre St., Pottsville.
Powwowing, also known as Braucherei, has deep roots in Pennsylvania Dutch culture, dating back centuries. It blends elements of faith, folklore, and healing techniques that have been passed down through generations. The practice, which includes prayers, charms, and symbolic rituals, has long been a part of rural Pennsylvania’s heritage.
McKinney, known for his engaging storytelling and deep knowledge of local history, will explore the origins of powwowing, its role in the community, and how it continues to influence regional traditions today.
Admission is free for members of the Historical Society, while the general public can attend for a $5 fee.
