The Schuylkill Haven Lady Canes etched their names into the history books on Friday night, securing their first-ever Schuylkill League Girls Basketball Championship with a 38-31 victory over the North Schuylkill Lady Spartans.
The matchup marked the third meeting between these two teams this season, with North Schuylkill having won both previous encounters. However, this time, Schuylkill Haven was determined to change the narrative.
The Lady Canes stormed out of the gate, jumping to an early 11-2 lead with just over four minutes remaining in the first quarter. North Schuylkill managed to cut the deficit slightly, but Schuylkill Haven still held an 11-7 advantage at the end of the opening period.
North Schuylkill fought back in the second quarter, coming within one point of tying the game at 11-10 with seven minutes left before halftime. However, Schuylkill Haven responded with a dominant stretch, extending their lead to 21-10 with 3:45 remaining in the quarter. By halftime, the Lady Canes had built a comfortable 26-16 lead.
In the third quarter, Schuylkill Haven maintained control, leading 28-16 with just over four minutes left. North Schuylkill mounted a late push, cutting the deficit to six by the end of the quarter, with the scoreboard reading 28-22 heading into the final period.
With under two minutes remaining in the game, Schuylkill Haven held a 38-31 lead. The Lady Canes’ defense held strong down the stretch, securing the victory and their first-ever Schuylkill League Championship title.
Both teams will now advance to the District XI Tournament. Schuylkill Haven enters the competition as the No. 2 seed in the Class 3A division, while North Schuylkill holds the No. 2 ranking in Class 4A.
