On Sunday, February 9, several scouts from Cub Scout Pack 651-Summit Station delivered Valentine’s Day gifts to the senior residents at Orwigsburg Nursing & Rehab Center and Seton Manor Nursing & Rehab Center.
They signed cards and assembled gifts during their scheduled weekly den and pack meetings.
The Cub Scouts, ranging from 2nd to 5th grade, participated in these events to earn time towards their Citizenship and Community adventures. Every rank within Scouting requires a Cub Scout to understand why it’s important to be involved in helping others—not only within their family, friends, or school, but also by reaching out to their communities, assisting those in need, even if it’s just to remind them that they’re not forgotten.
Kevin Huneke, Cubmaster, commented, “Due to the nature of these facilities, we felt it would be a great way to provide a small amount of joy to the residents while allowing the Cub Scouts to give back to the community. We are hopeful it also brought back some fond memories for the residents of their children if they were involved in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts in the past.”
Pack 651 will be organizing more outings for the Cub Scouts to visit other local facilities. In the past, they made crafts for the Tremont Health & Rehabilitation Center, gathered non-perishable food items for the nationwide Scouting for Food drive, collected clothing items for Servants to All in Pottsville, and assisted with handing out food items at the Schuylkill Haven Food Pantry.
Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, and citizenship qualities that influence their adult lives. They can try new things, make lifelong friends, and have fun outdoors—at campouts, fishing, and hiking—all while getting prepared for whatever life puts in front of them.
