Weather-Related Vehicle Restrictions Announced for Interstate 81

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced updated vehicle restrictions on Interstate 81 in response to the latest weather forecasts. 

Motorists are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during the upcoming storm and to exercise extreme caution if travel is essential.

Vehicle restrictions will be communicated through variable message boards, the 511PA traveler information website, and smartphone apps. 

These restrictions will be lifted as soon as conditions are deemed safe. Adjustments to restrictions may occur based on real-time road conditions and reports from first responders, law enforcement, and PennDOT and PA Turnpike personnel.

Interstate 81 Restrictions

  • Effective 12:01 AM, Thursday, February 6: Tier 4 vehicle restrictions will be in place from the Maryland border to I-80.

Tier 4 Restrictions:

  • No commercial vehicles are permitted.
  • Prohibits all school buses, commercial buses, motor coaches, motorcycles, RVs/motorhomes, and passenger vehicles towing trailers.
