The Mahanoy Area Elementary Wrestling Team has secured their first-ever Coal Cracker League Championship title.
The championship took place on Sunday, March 2, with Mahanoy rising to the occasion as the #2 seed.
The journey to the title was no easy feat. Mahanoy triumphed over Tamaqua with a narrow 54-50 victory in the opening round. This was followed by a comeback win against Mount Carmel, avenging an earlier season loss with a score of 55-41. The championship match saw Mahanoy face off against the #1 seed and host, Jim Thorpe. Mahanoy emerged victorious with a 47-44 win, clinching their first Coal Cracker League Championship title.
The Mahanoy Elementary team comprises students from both Mahanoy Area and Shenandoah Valley School Districts, ranging from grades K-6. The Coal Cracker League includes 11 other schools from Schuylkill, Monroe, and Northumberland Counties.
The community's pride was palpable as local Fire Departments from Mahanoy City, Delano, Ryan Township, and Shenandoah celebrated the team's achievement with a parade through Mahanoy City on Sunday afternoon.
