Schuylkill Haven Prepares for 275th Anniversary Celebration

Schuylkill Haven is preparing to celebrate its 275th anniversary in 2025 with a series of events honoring its past and embracing its future.

The town's history dates back to 1750, when John Fincher, a Quaker from Chester County, moved to the area along the upper Schuylkill River, then a wilderness. Fincher's family endured hardship during the French and Indian War when their home and barn were destroyed in 1756. Though they rebuilt, tragedy struck again in 1763 when Fincher, his wife, and two sons were killed by local tribes siding with the French.

In 1775, Martin Dreibelbis arrived and became the first permanent settler. His son Jacob later established the town's layout and gave it the name Schuylkill Haven. The Dreibelbis family played a vital role in developing the town's economy, constructing sawmills, grist mills, a distillery, and a general store.

By 1825, the Schuylkill Canal opened, becoming a significant economic driver for the community as coal barges traveled through the heart of the town. Remnants of the canal are still visible today along Parkway, now part of Route 443.

To commemorate its 275th anniversary, Schuylkill Haven has organized a series of events, beginning with an official kick-off on April 5. Mayor Mike Devlin will recognize the anniversary at the Fincher plaque in Bubeck Park at 10 a.m., where he will also unveil a special 275th-anniversary logo.

Additional festivities planned throughout the year include:

  • History in the Park: Presented by local historian Richard Nagle.
  • Historical Memorabilia Displays: Featured in downtown businesses and the Walk In Art Center.
  • Walk, Wine & Wander Event: A special June celebration integrated with the town's traditional festivities.
  • Time Capsule Ceremony: To be located at canal lock #12 on Parkway, scheduled to be opened on the town's 300th anniversary.
  • Special Edition Food Items: Including themed cookies, donuts, ice cream, and even a commemorative moonshine.
  • Anniversary Pageant: Showcasing the community's historical roots.
  • Special Edition Postcards and Postal Cancellation: Celebrating this historic milestone.
  • Promotional anniversary items will also be available for sale throughout the celebration.
