Upcoming April Events with the Schuylkill County Conservancy

The Schuylkill County Conservancy is hosting a variety of outdoor events in the coming weeks, offering unique opportunities to explore nature, contribute to conservation efforts, and learn from expert naturalists. 

Here’s a look at what’s coming up:

American Woodcock Watch
Date: Friday, April 4 | Time: 7:15 – 8:15 PM
Location: Tuscarora State Park, Crow Trail Parking Lot (west end)
Join nature enthusiasts for a thrilling evening observing the courtship display of the American Woodcock. Participants will witness the bird’s aerial performances and ground calling. Afterward, an optional short hike will offer a chance to listen for owls. Attendees should bring a flashlight, wear sturdy shoes, and dress for the weather. This free event is not dog-friendly. Earth Day Celebration – Guardianship of Trees
Date: Saturday, April 12 | Time: 10:00 – 11:00 AM
Location: St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Orwigsburg, PA
Celebrate Earth Day with an open house featuring crafts, interactive exhibits, and kids' activities. At 10 AM, Chris and Bianca Shadle, Pennsylvania forest stewards, will share their experiences improving woodlands and enhancing wildlife habitats. This free event is open to the public. Spring Clean-up and Invasive Patrol at Frog Hollow
Date: Saturday, April 19 | Time: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Location: Frog Hollow Parking Area, Stone Mountain Road, Friedensburg
Volunteers are needed to clear debris and remove invasive plant species from Frog Hollow’s trails. No special skills are required—just bring gardening gloves, insect repellent, and water. Wear sturdy shoes and long-sleeved clothing. For details, call Barbara at 570-617-2421.

Schuylkill County Sketchers with Audrey Wells, Naturalist
Date: Saturday, April 19 | Time: 10:00 – 11:00 AM
Location: Sweet Arrow Lake County Park, Pine Grove, PA
Participants will take a guided walk with Audrey Wells, a naturalist, to observe and sketch nature. This is not a formal workshop but an opportunity for all ages to enjoy creativity in the outdoors. Bring your own sketching materials. Free event.

Wildflower Walk at Frog Hollow
Date: Saturday, April 26 | Time: 10:00 – 11:30 AM
Location: Frog Hollow Parking Area, Stone Mountain Road, Friedensburg
Explore the early bloomers of the season, including Virginia Bluebells and Trout Lilies, while learning about their ecological importance. Trails may be rough and wet, so dress appropriately and bring insect repellent. No dogs allowed. Free event. Contact Barbara at 570-617-2421 for details.

Bird Walk with Technology at Frog Hollow
Date: Saturday, May 3 | Time: 8:00 – 9:30 AM
Location: Frog Hollow Parking Area, Stone Mountain Road, Friedensburg
Discover local and migrating bird species while learning about birding technology. Ethical use of these tools will also be discussed. Be prepared for rough trails and bring water and insect repellent. For more details, call Barbara at 570-617-2421.

Frog Hollow Day Camp – Registration Open
Camp Dates: June 16 – 18 | Time: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Location: Frog Hollow Nature Area, Friedensburg, PA
Children entering grades 1 to 5 can enjoy hands-on environmental activities at this summer day camp. Space is limited to 20 attendees. Register between April 1 – May 31 by contacting Jane Kruse at 570-628-4802 for an application.
