A Schuylkill County landmark recently marked a major milestone, as Tony’s Lunch celebrated 50 years of business.
Known far and wide as the home of the iconic Screamer and Fluff Burger, the legendary eatery continues to hold a special place in the hearts—and stomachs—of locals and visitors alike.
On Thursday night, Girardville Mayor Michael Zangari paid a visit to the famed late-night spot to honor its half-century legacy. On behalf of the borough, the mayor presented a plaque commemorating the achievement, along with a $50 bill—a nod to the longstanding tradition of patrons signing dollar bills and adding them to the walls of the restaurant.
The plaque reads:
"On behalf of all the residents and visitors of Girardville Borough, we would like to wish you congratulations on a wonderful 50 years of business! Here is to the next 50 years of checking to 'see if the light’s on'!"
Taking part in the presentation were Tony's Lunch owners Joe and Claire Salukas along with their grandson Brady who is beginning to learn the ropes of the business.
The celebration officially took place on March 13th and 14th, marking five decades since the small, no-frills establishment first opened its doors. Tony's Lunch has remained a staple of the borough ever since, drawing crowds and lines with its unique menu and unmistakable charm.
Founded in 1974, Tony’s Lunch quickly gained a loyal following thanks to its unusual hours—typically opening in the evening and staying open late—and its even more unusual offerings. The Screamer, a burger topped with raw onions and spicy sauce, became a local legend, as did the Fluff Burger, which features marshmallow crème alongside traditional toppings. While the menu raised eyebrows for first-timers, it kept people coming back for generations.
Over the years, Tony's has become more than just a place to grab a bite. It's a time capsule of Girardville culture, where regulars, tourists, and late-night wanderers all share the same narrow counter space, and where every dollar on the wall tells a story.
As the borough looks forward to another 50 years of late-night eats and nostalgic flavor, one thing is certain: if the light is on, Tony’s Lunch is ready to serve—with a Screamer in one hand and a tradition in the other.
