“Aaliyah’s Cause” Kicks Off to Fight Hunger in Schuylkill County

What started as a simple school project has grown into a community-wide effort to combat hunger in Schuylkill County.

In February, Minersville Borough Police Chief Jeffrey Bowers was approached by local student Aaliyah Rosado and her mother Christina with a request for an interview for a class assignment. But their conversation quickly turned toward a bigger goal — doing something meaningful for the community.

Having known Aaliyah’s family for many years, Chief Bowers worked with them and Minersville Borough Council Member Terry Raffety, a longtime supporter of the Salvation Army, to develop an idea that would have a real local impact. The result: Aaliyah’s Cause, a food drive aimed at collecting canned goods and non-perishable food items for those in need.

The Minersville Police Department has partnered with Aaliyah and her family to bring the initiative to life. Donations can be dropped off at the Minersville Police Department, located at 15 N. Delaware Ave, any time of day, seven days a week, now through May 9, 2025.

Once collected, the donated items will be delivered to the Food for the Body & Soul Café, a program operated by the Salvation Army in nearby Pottsville. The café provides free, hot meals every Friday at noon to community members facing food insecurity.

Aaliyah has expressed her desire not only to spearhead the food drive but also to take part in preparing and serving meals through the café.

“She didn’t just want to organize the effort — she wanted to be hands-on and serve others directly,” said Chief Bowers. “That kind of compassion and commitment is something we’re proud to support.”

Community members are encouraged to contribute to the cause and help Aaliyah make a difference.
